Title: Salswabhavi Uthaman

Author: John Philipose

Language: Malayalam

Pages:169

About The Book

“Salswabhavi Uthaman – the deceptive title itself throws light into the characteristic of the protagonist and the plot in the novel. In Malayalam the name ‘Uthaman’ means an ideal man. This novel realistically exposes a false construct – Uthaman and the mutuality of such constructs and the societies. The novel reiterates that in a conducive environment evil flourishes like weeds in fertile soil. Uthaman is actually a silent villain, who exploited the weak and vulnerable ones and their emotions with knack of a wolf, but meets a tragic end, probably a deserving a fate.”

My review

Salswabhavi Uthaman by John Philipose is a short novel with an apt touch of humor. The title itself is capable to generate a curiosity around the main character, Uthaman. At the beginning itself, we could see that he met an accident and bedridden for a few days. But when I turn the pages, I realized that what makes him bedridden. The author presented this part of the story much humorously. The life of Uthaman is slowly unraveled and we get to know that who was he always.

He is not a hero. He is a villain who wears a mask and exploits the vulnerable. Through the loopholes of politics, he achieved what he wants. The important feature of this story is that the author is telling the whole story through Uthaman’s perspective. Uthaman justifies all his deeds perfectly. Sometimes he points to age-old societal norms, sometimes he uses his own familial connections to justify his deeds. But this accident was an eye-opener for him. How it happened and why it happened is another humorous part. But at last, he realizes his own mistakes but he has to pay for what he had done.

In the end, just like the floods, his sins purify him. The miseries made him think again, what is valuable and what not. This is also a lesson for everyone. The author has narrated an important thought through this satirical storyline.

An Interview with Rick Zazueta|Author of “Baja Air & Sea”

Today I’ll be hosting author Rick Zazueta on my blog. His debut book, “Baja Air & Sea” is available at Amazon.com.

4e7bd1c3-4006-47eb-afe2-dc14947336be

Me: What is your book about?

Rick: Baja Air & Sea is a novel about a stolen yacht and the adventures that happen aboard this vessel. The book, like everything in this world, is about the human condition.

Big Money. Big Yachts. Big Adventures.

Behind every great fortune there is a great crime. Julian Mayorca wasn’t always a billionaire. At one point he was an honorable port captain and legendary yachtsman, but a single temptation—a crime of opportunity—leads him down a path of betrayal, passion, power, and the sea.

Baja Air & Sea, a high end crime-thriller set in La Paz, Mexico, begins with the story of Julian Mayorca. As a port captain, he manages the harbor and oversees a fifty-million-dollar budget. His only mistake? Being incorruptible.

On a sunny day, his cousin, Alex Cuevas, who works for a notorious criminal, holds a gun to Julian’s head and forces him to sign resignation papers. A series of questionable decisions cause Julian to transition into the entrepreneur he never set out to be. What follows is six years of Julian’s life; his voyages, romances, mishaps, and how a need for revenge leads to immense fortune and adventure he never thought possible.

Me: It is quite an adventure. What inspired the plot?

Rick: I was a yacht steward aboard a luxury yacht on the Sea Cortez. I met so many characters and had so many adventures during my time at sea. But it wasn’t just the life at sea that inspired me, it was living in this “other Mexico” that made it all the more interesting. There are two Baja Californias, the expat community and the locals, and as a Mexican-American bilingual person, I was able to seamlessly navigate these two worlds that seem so different. After some time, I began to realize that other than the language barrier, the two Bajas are essentially the same. So I started thinking about blending the two cultures and writing a book in that tone.

Baja Cover Only (1)

Me: Why did you choose to have the story take place in Baja California?

Rick: I love Baja California. I’ve always been completely passionate about it. It’s a land so unique and so full of tales that I wanted to be a part of its folklore. The story only makes sense in Baja California, because of many factors; its proximity to the US, and the influence it directly has on Mexican culture, the climate, the sea, the desert, the tourism, the corruption, the food and lifestyle, for me it was just a perfect pot to stir.

Me: You have a lot of colorful and creative characters. Did you think them up from scratch or were they inspired by people you know?

Rick: Stephen King said that all characters are a combination of three people; Somebody you know, yourself, and somebody you imagine. So, yes all characters are a play on that. I have always been a curious person and I’ve always been more interested in people than in anything else, so I like to observe human beings, how they are, how they react, their sense of humor, their sense of style, I can be a big extrovert, so I meet a lot of people and pay attention to their lives.

Me: What are some of the more powerful themes that your characters struggle within the book?

Rick: Lust, revenge, selling out, greed, faith, love, and destiny. The characters I write are real people to me. I treat them with respect and I try to get to know them. I am aware that they have complex lives and I am grateful that they let me in to see what’s going on in their world.

Me: What type of reader would enjoy this book?

Rick: I wrote this book to inspire people with a tale of adventure, passion, desire, and the sea. If life has gotten too predictable, if you need an escape into a tangible world of excitement and want to get completely lost in the waves of the ocean and in the luxury of big yachts and Eurocopters, then this book might be for you.

Me: What did you learn about yourself while writing this book?

Rick: Writing a novel is a long journey, and I learned not to judge myself more harshly than I would others. I learned that if I treat these characters with respect, I have to treat myself and those around me with that same respect. So if I commit a mistake, I just erase it and continue.

Me: Who is your favorite character and why?

Rick: Papa Fabio is the money man; he doesn’t get as much attention as he deserves, but for me, this guy is a huge success story. Born to a family of miners in the small town of El Triunfo, developed into a mathematical genius from a young age, got a scholarship to La Paz Technical Institute, and then a masters degree from MIT. Now an adviser to the UN on international tax code, a great financial analyst, rogue investment banker, and CPA.

About the Author

Rick Zazueta resides in Baja California alongside his wife, Geraldine, and their two kids; Maximo and Larissa. When away from his duties, he plays professional croquet as a member of the Mexico national team. Baja Air & Sea is his first novel.

Thin Ice: Book 5 of Whispering Willows series by Diana Dawn|Book review

53190724._SX318_

Title: Thin Ice

Author: Diana Dawn

Language: English

Thin Ice by Diana Dawn is the fifth installment of the Whispering Willow series. The story of Princess Snow White is now progressed into a family drama in this installment. Book 4 of the series ended in a cliffhanger. Just like all the other books, the author solved that mystery at the beginning. But she didn’t follow the same pattern in this book.

I have read 4 books in this series previously. So, in all those books, a particular pattern is followed. The mystery was solved in the beginning and then a calm and happy moments of Snow and Mitch. Then, towards the end, the plot starts to get more and more twists to end it on a suspense. But in this book, the author doesn’t adopt that fashion. Of course, she solved the mystery in the beginning and managed to end the story is a great suspense. But overall the story is not calm and pleasant anymore. Particularly because the situation in Willows is not much happier. Snow’s twin sister Lily has an important role in this story. The author gave much preference to her character in this one. Her thoughts, her dark past, her evils, and her feelings are the main part of the story.

I grew a great extend of fond towards Snow through these books. Although the author has given her a good level of importance in this book, I’m not at all satisfied with that. But the story is in a new turn. This turn demands Lily’s presence and it is inevitable in most of the scenes.

I would like to add a few words about the end before winding this up. This climax is not like the others. The fear is enormous. The suspense is paramount, this time. How the dark past can possibly ruin one’s present is portrayed much accurately in this story. A must-read!

An Interview with Jason Arnold|Author of ‘A Beginner’s Guide To Wine’

Today I’ll be hosting author Jason Murray Arnold on my blog. His debut book, “A Beginner’s Guide To Wine” published in June 2020 is available at Amazon.com.

Jason Arnold 2

Me: What inspired you to start writing The Beginner’s Guide to Wine?

Jason: I think, more than anything, it had to do with the fact that while I was learning to appreciate wine, I just couldn’t find a simple guide to start. I had to learn everything the hard way, by getting out there and asking questions. Sure, there are courses on wine, but they aren’t very approachable to the beginner. Too often, they contain information that you can’t begin to grasp while just getting started. The language of the wine world can seem like an entirely different language at first. I read that there are thousands of words used to describe the taste of wine. That can be overwhelming to the beginner. So, I’ve tried to make this book the answer to that problem. How can you understand wine when you don’t have years of learning and lack the experience that trying a few hundred wines brings?

During my career, I’ve had the opportunity to travel and try so many different wines. But the one thing I’ve learned when discussing wine with the people I’ve met along the way is that many of them felt exactly how I did when I began. They find even the basics of wine difficult to understand. I mean with all the fancy words, it’s no wonder that’s true. With so many different varieties of wine and so many different wine growing regions, it can be confusing. They find it difficult to understand what makes one red so drastically different from another. So I tried to explain these things, as easily as I could. The book is my attempt at making the world of wine understandable to the average person. My hope is that by the end of the book, the reader will appreciate everything that goes into making fine wine.

Me: Can you share a snippet that isn’t in the blurb or excerpt?

Jason: Oh, what to share? It’s hard to share just one thing. But I think I’ll share a bit an excerpt from my chapter on American wine. It’s about wines made in Missouri, which is something that very few people, even in the wine world, know much about. But it’s an area that grows a variety of grapes that you, otherwise, rarely see made into wines, which makes it special.

“Missouri is perhaps most famous for producing wine in the corridor known as the Missouri Rhineland. This winegrowing region was founded by German immigrants in the early to mid-nineteenth century. By the 1880s, Missouri was the country’s top wine-growing region. It was the Napa Valley of its day.

Today the state benefits from Missouri’s long summers and thin rocky Ozark soil. Missouri is even known as the cave state for its many underground caverns. There, wineries often utilize the natural cellars. Missouri’s most prominent variety of wine is the state grape, the Norton. But it also produces plenty of sweet wine with native grapes, such as the Concord. Most vineyards also plant French-American hybrids, such as Vignoles and Chardonel.”

Me: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Jason: I don’t think I ever planned to be a writer. In my professional life, I’m an accountant. I have both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in business. But, I’ve always been passionate about wine. It’s one of my favourite things in life. Wine is something that I appreciate like one would appreciate art. You can describe a particular wine in so many different ways. I suppose you could say each bottle is its own work of art. For me, writing this book was a labor of love. I wanted to share what I’ve learned with others.

Me: What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Jason: For me, most difficult part was deciding what information to include and what to exclude. Some things certainly seemed vital, but others more trivial. The Beginner’s Guide to Wine is supposed to be an introduction to wine, and if not for having an editor to reign me back in,  I could have gone on and on about all the finer details and nuances of winemaking. The final work, I hope, provides enough information to answer all questions a newbie would have without overreaching. One of the motivations for writing this book is to encourage the reader explore wine even further. I don’t want them to stop here.

Me: What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book?

Jason: When I began this book, I had a pretty good grasp of the major wine grapes and the regions. I could describe the difference between all of them. But I really didn’t know a lot about the history of wine. That took research. From the famous story of Jesus turning water into wine, I knew that wine was around at least as early as Rome. But, I discovered, that it actually goes back thousands of years before that. That surprised me.

Me: Who is your favourite author and why?

Jason: I’d have to say my favourite author was Francis Scott Fizgerald. Not because he struggled with alcoholism, writing about a probation era in The Great Gatsby, but because of his incredible depictions of the Jazz Age. His work always seemed to me like the work of a romantic and the themes of youth, despair, and age resonate with us all. He’s a classic American author that deserves all the acclaim he’s received.

Me: What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Jason: There is a 1971 book by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson called The World Atlas of Wine. I’d say that it was one of the first essential works of literature on wine. They revised it last year and it contains some of the most descriptions of wine and the regions in which it has grown.

Me: Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Jason: Well, if you actually want to finish the book, you have to just sit down and write it. You have to keep writing it. Too many distractions and too much planning can both kill your ability to actually get anything done. Words have to hit paper or you’ll never finish. But, I think that the most important thing is to write about something you’re interested in. If you’re not passionate about what you’re writing, it’ll be hard to find the motivation to finish.

Me: If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Jason: Just three words? Methodical, meticulous, and sophisticated.

Me: Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers about?

Jason: Well, I’m going to start blogging about wine. Before this book, I really didn’t write much. But now, I don’t want to stop. I want to continue sharing knowledge about wine and diving deeper into specific topics. This book is just an introduction. Maybe I’ll write a book specific to Missouri wine. It’s an underrated wine region. And it’s the next obvious, move for me. I mean, that’s where I live and work. There are some great vineyards in my backyard.

Catering Your Way to Financial independence by Manvir Singh Anand is a complete guide for a beginner to understand and start their own catering business. The Covid-19 crisis has retarded the growth of many businesses and due to that fact, many people are looking for a career change. This is a complete guide for everyone who has a remote idea to start a catering business in the near future.

The primary purpose of non-fiction books is to convey knowledge as much as possible. But I rarely seen a book like this. It has everything you need. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular part of the business. The author explains almost all aspects such as planning, sales, menu preparation, operation, management, funding, and safety precautions due to Covid. Also, a helpful Q&A session is included at the end.

Title: Jobless in Jumeirah

Author: Rohit Bhagat

Pages:159

Jobless in Jumeirah by Rohit Bhagat is a much closer to the real-life portrayal of a job-seeker. Just like as mentioned in the cover page, this is a lyrical tribute to the job-seeking fables in the glittering sands of Dubai. The middle-east is the age-old haven for every man in the world. People migrate and sweat in this sand to give colors to their dreams. Just like the protagonist in the book, many are working and living their life in this land of glittering sands.

We all know how painstaking is the process of getting hired for a fresh out graduate. After months of sleepless and restless efforts, one gets hold of a job. But what will happen if we lost our only source of income, that precious job suddenly in a day? We have to go all around this painful process once again.

This is the realistic tale of that pain. Someone who has been living in all comforts all his life, this is a new challenge. A challenge where success only matters. The process of acclimatizing to the reality is a very slow process. This challenge will drain our mental and physical health. We will learn the value of friendships, professional relationships, and faith on the way. Most importantly we can analyze and explore the unknown emotions of our own self.

The portrayal of job hunting and rejection is so much realistic in this book. The author has penned down every emotions and phases that can possibly occur over the course of job hunting. The book is truly a lyrical treat because of the choice of words.

It is structured as a memoir with small poems in between. Overall it is good short read expressing pure human emotions very accurately.

An Interview with Author Roland Sato Page| Author of ‘Eating the Forbidden Fruit’

Today I’ll be hosting author Roland Sato Page on my blog. His debut novel, Eating the Forbidden Fruit is a gritty fiction loosely based on true events in the author’s life.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 3.11.57 PM (1) (1)

Me: What inspired you to start writing Eating the Forbidden fruit?

Roland: My mother passed two years ago, I promised her I would finish what I started. Actually, I wrote the novel many years ago just never completed the story. So I felt compelled to finish the book leaving a written blueprint for my legacy to pass down for generations to come. Also, writing helps manage my depression due to Lupus.

Me: Can you share a snippet that isn’t in the blurb or excerpt?

Roland: Sure! One section that stands out is the last time I spoke with my father. On a Thursday afternoon, my father and I had a bad falling out. He told me he was worried about the company I was keeping and what I was doing to get the amount of money I had. I informed him there was nothing to worry about I had everything under control. The conversation escalated to an argument resulting in me saying something every disrespectful. I left St. Louis traveling to Central State University in Warrensburg Mo to visit my brother. I needed to clear my head. However, before I left something was unsettling to me. I knew I made a mistake. I wanted to turn around and go tell my pops I was sorry for what I said. Yet my pride clouded my judgment. I eventually arrived in Warrensburg on a Friday. I discussed the situation with my brother. I told him I felt so bad. Soon as I returned to St. Louis I needed to apologize to our father. It was good to get out the city, but I really could not enjoy myself in Warrensburg. I passed the time meeting different girls and just being totally reckless. Selling drugs and sleeping with random girls I barely knew. Saturday evening rolled around, word got to me my brother was looking for me on campus. Once I found him. He rushed to me grabbing by the arms. “Where you been?” He screamed. I looked confused pushing him back. “What’s wrong man?” I replied. He started to cry, “I been looking all over for you. Pops passed away. He had a heart attack.” At that moment my world collapsed. The reality set in. I cursed my pops out on a Thursday and Saturday he departed. I would never have the change to apologize.

Me: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Roland: I write out of necessity to maintain my sanity. Depression is real. I suffer from PTSD.

Me: What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Roland: Getting motivated is the biggest obstacle. Lupus makes me quite fatigued. Sometimes I have to push myself to finish writing.

Me: What do you think makes a good story?

Roland: It’s a true story many can relate to. A down to Earth tale of karma. We all fall from grace sometimes more than once.

Me: What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book?

Roland: Eating the Forbidden Fruit allowed me to archive so many memories I thought I forgot. Good memories that can never be replaced.

Me: How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

Roland: On so many occasions I cried and laughed. I realize I been fortunate to have a supportive family. I truly believe that’s what fared me through the storm.

Me: Who is your favorite author and why?

Roland: Stephen King his is the G.O.A.T! His creativity is untouchable. I am also a tattooist, a visual artist so I appreciate the way he transforms his books into film masterpieces. The ideas he comes up with amazes me. It’s like is he even human.

Me: What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Roland: S.E Hinton “The Outsiders” a book before it’s time. A true tale of prejudices, bullying, and underdog becoming a hero.

Me: Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Roland: Well for me I write about things I am familiar with which get my creative juices flowing. If I have to research to write something. I lose interest.

Me: If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Roland: Humble, Committed, and Spiritual.

Me: Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers about?

Roland: Yes indeed. My second novel titled “Skin Deep” about the temptations in the body art industry. When you dealing with skin and woman as a married man the drama is plentiful.

Snow is willing to risk everything to find the sister she never knew she had, even her new happy life in the Willows. Leaving her true love behind in search of her family, her plans are to bring her sister back to the Willows with her. But will her journey into the mirror bring her the outcome she desires…will she find her sister, or will she again face the witch, her stepmother Margurite? ‘Gypsy Flower’ is the fourth book in the Whispering Willows series.

Review

Gypsy Flower by Diana Dawn is the fourth installment of the Whispering Willows series. I have been following the story from the very beginning and was eager to know what happens next, when I took this one to read. Princess snow embarks a journey to find her long-lost sister at any cost. The path was unknown. She had absolutely no clues about her sister’s whereabouts at first. But slowly everything clears. She finds clues on the way. But this quest is just the beginning. The entire world of Princess Snow took a turn through this journey. As the author is revealing more and more at times, the story is becoming more mysterious. Just like other installments, she ends the story at a cliff hanger. But I must say this ending has a hint of unpredictability more than other books. Making readers dying to know what happens next!

The relationship between Snow and Mitch also getting interesting here. The author has given much depth to Snow’s character through all these books. A gradual evolution of her character is evident from beginning to now. A maturity in character and relationship is expected from her as a protagonist and she is a perfect blend of all emotions. The author has taken much time to unravel the sacred bond between sisters in the middle. But she was careful to not lose the pace. She is not giving away many details. I think this adds up mystery here and there. Many of the characters in Willows are suspicious from the beginning. Here in this part too, their mysteries are growing chapter by chapter.

Apart from the third book, the author has given more importance to the life and people of Willows in this book. It was a heart-warming part to read. With the introduction of new characters, once again the lives of Willows were picking up their lost rhythm.

I read in a single stretch because just like other installments, the narration is impeccable. I’m eagerly waiting to read the next one!

With the help of a new dwarf friend…who may have secrets of his own, Snow must battle the witch and uncover the mysteries of the magic mirror in the mine. ‘Mirror, Mirror’ is the third book in the Whispering Willows series.

Review

Mirror, Mirror by Diana Dawn is the third installment of Whispering Willows series. In this book, the journey of Princess Snow from unknown to known continues. I have read the first two books in this series. So I had a fair idea about the story and the storytelling capabilities of the author. After reading this installment, I must say I admire more her, for bringing this book series to this world.
Diana picks up the story from where she ended the second book. It was ended in a cliffhanger, so the first chapter was the explanation of that suspense. After unveiling some secrets and suspense, she again reunited Snow and Mitch. I really liked the part where Mitch was devastated in the loss of Snow and his determination to find her at any cost. Besides the protagonists, I felt that the author gave much space to other characters in this book. Ben, Max, Eddy…all are supporting the story well. Also, the much-awaited Royal wedding was one of my favorite parts too.

After calming the storm, the author again ended this book at a cliffhanger. But in this time the twist was unpredictable. I was expecting a re-entry of the evil stepmother, but she gave me another surprise at the end.

The narration was flawless. The author connected all the characters well and drove a fast-paced story beautifully. The scenes were depicted vividly allowing the readers to get connected with the emotions of characters and the plot. The climax was enough for me to pick up the next book of this series.

Review

Nostradamus Speaks Again by Elisabeth Jorgensen is a life-changing book indeed. I have read many spiritual books over the past two years. But I never came close to something like this one. The author is someone who was in pursuit of inner peace for many years and she achieved it at last. From that acquired wisdom, she is trying to guide us to that eternal joy.

As I read through, the pleasure I felt was immense. I can’t even describe that feeling through words. We all are in some kind of sadness in our life. Our goals, our wishes are somewhat pulling us away from what we call us peace. The truth path that we’ve to seek to get rid of these pain is love. The path which is not easy as we think at the beginning. To know love is to gain an understanding of the creator of this world, God.

Through this book, the author is drawing two parallel paths of love. But in the end they both converge to one, which is inevitable.

Recommended.
