An Interview with Tymeka Coney| Author of “I Don’t Like Racism”

Today I’ll be hosting author Tymeka Coney in my blog. Her new release “I Don’t Like Racism” is available on Amazon for pre-order.

Me: What inspired you to start writing I Don’t Like Racism?

Tymeka: I was inspired to write “I Don’t Like Racism,” for several reasons. One I am an Educator and I think it’s important to make a difference in the lives of our youth which are our future. They need to be aware of their value despite the color of their skin. 2. With the recent onset of the Black Lives Matter movements to reignite as a result of the vast amount of Police brutality cases occurring with the death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor recently, and having witnessed police brutality first hand, I wanted to make a contribution to the movement and to be apart of the conversations that need to be had to further the awareness of racism and what we can do to peacefully eradicate it and it starts with our youth.

Me: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Tymeka: I was probably five years old when I realized I had a passion for writing. I was always writing letters to my Mom and poems when I was younger. I took up creative writing classes in college and I even remember sitting in other classes in college that were not writing classes and daydreaming and writing poems sometimes because that was what kept me alert. Other people were probably doodling and I was writing. It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles in my adult years, that I realized that I could turn my passion for writing into a career. Being in a culture and surrounded by people who get paid to create and write everyday for a living opened my mind up to see that I could actually do this as a living and not just as a hobby. I do believe I was born with the gift to write but over the years, I have studied the craft and continued to hone my craft in all genres of writing from scripts to songs to books.

Me: How long have you been writing?

Tymeka: I believe I may have answered this question previously. I have been writing since elementary school I would say. I’ve been writing professionally since my last year in high school when I actually got paid for writing a poem I wrote in a contest. Since then, I have certainly been on a consistent path of writing for over 15+ years.

Me:What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Tymeka: The most difficult part of my artistic process is merging art with commerce or merging your creativity with marketing and the marketplace. When it’s your art, you can pretty much write about whatever you want to write about. When you are selling it into the marketplace you have to make sure that it is commercially viable art for the masses most often and not just what you deem is great but what the target audience you are serving may think is great. Other than that…I don’t have many difficulties. The only other thing could be sometimes because I have so many thoughts about things that I want to write and characters in my head etc., that it can be challenging to decide where I will devote my energy to next and what type of project I will write next.

Me: What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book?

Tymeka: The most surprising thing I discovered while writing this book was how the subject of racism can get really emotional and it really does affect all ages from a child to an adult, all races and all genders and there really has to be more conversation about this subject matter so we really gain some understanding of the past, present and the future. I discovered that this subject and this book is bigger than me and I am just thankful to be entrusted to be an instrument and catalyst through my words and creativity for positive change.

Me: Who is your favourite author and why?

Tymeka: I have so many books that I have read from Spiritual to Self Help, Finance, Autobiographies, Relationship etc. I don’t really have a favorite author. I will say that I am very fond of poets and poetry books being one myself. I have really enjoyed books by Langston Hughes, Alicia Keys, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Shel Silverstein. I even like children’s books as they have a rhythmic flow like poetry to me. I like Dr. Seuss, Grace Byers, Matthew Cherry and of course my own writing.

Me: What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Tymeka: I would say I am influenced by the poets I mentioned as well as the children’s book authors I mentioned in some way by reading their books.

Me: Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Tymeka: I say don’t allow it to be an emotionally draining or stressful pursuit. Write about what you are passionate about or if you have something to say or share with your community or the world that you know about or have experienced as this makes you an expert on the subject. I say write when you are in a comfortable place and allow writing to be relaxing and not stressful for you. Don’t force it but allow it to flow naturally from you and that is what will continue to drive the story you want to tell. Don’t worry about the structure in the beginning but just write from what your heart and your mind tells you to write and others will resonate with that authenticity.

If you need to brush up, take an online class, get a mentor in your area of interest and read other writers and just write on a consistent basis.

Me: If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Tymeka: In three words I would say I am a Tenacious, Loving and Creative Individual. TLC…My initials.

Me: Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers about? I’m just working on getting the word and awareness out about my new book “I Don’t Like Racism.” I want it to be a movement #IDon’tLikeRacism..I have Tshirts as well. I think the time is now to talk about this and I just want everyone to think about and take action for positive change. I’m always writing. I will write another children’s book for sure. I have some songs, another book of poetry to come. I have some TV & Film scripts in development. Just follow me @ www.tymekaconey.com and we will see what’s next but in the meantime…Get the book at Amazon and tell a friend about it, your neighbour, grandparents, parents, teachers and let’s just spread love and unity in the world.

My review

The Ouiums Journey is a fantasy thriller that will lead you to the peak of creativity.

The story is set in the enchanted magical world where good is fighting the evil to protect the existence of mankind. Esa Blyth who is escaped from the pits of hell and out from the influence of dark magic. But he was not welcomed by his coven and family. Being an outcast in no time, he is trying to adjust with the normal life while fighting with nightmares and dark power which is trying to take control of him. When he met Skylar Lee, a dark witch everything around him begins to change. He was united with others like him and started to practice his magic peacefully. But Akin, a purist who was attacking this coven now and then started to show his true colors. Akin is now trying to establish the will of Thegon, the powerful God of Hell, in the Earth, by corrupting the government. Will Esa and Skylar able to protect mankind from the mighty power of Thegon?

The story is a perfectly crafted one. The author has carefully structured the story with the dark mystery thriller elements. The chemistry between the protagonists, Esa and Skylar is beautifully expressed throughout the story. Although the story is fast-paced with twists and turns, the author has given space for their passionate love also. Finally, we have a protagonist from the LGBTQ community in this fantasy genre.

What makes this story unique is its human touch. All the main characters possess the incredible power of magic but they all are very human. The power doesn’t corrupt their nature. The magic made them more human. That’s why they can still differentiate between good and bad and fight for what is right. They have a moral compass and compassion. The story is often shifting between the magical realm and the Earth now and then. This explains why the demons always wants to influence and conquer mankind.

I liked the character, Esa so much. His conflicting personality is very relatable. He possesses a great power, but he is confused and afraid to embrace its possibility. He is pushed to take part in this war. But when he realized that there is no turning back and he has to fight with the dark God for his freedom, he is finally awakened. He conquered all his doubts and fights with full power. The message is clear. We can achieve anything if we conquer our fears and embrace our strengths.

Indeed a beautiful read in the dark fantasy genre.

My review

After School at Middletown Middle is a collection of eleven stories revolving in and around a mysterious public school. Middletown Middle school is an infamous school which carries a long tradition. It is established way back in 1886. Over the years, the school sustained its prestigious academic quality but grew mysterious decade after decade. This is a virtual tour to this paranoramal public school.

What makes everyone attracted to the history of this school is curiosity. Middletown Middle is not a magical school. It is a normal one. But it has some special features that others don’t have. It is bound by some strange rules. It has many strange stories to tell. The strangeness of this school is partially due to its location and partially due to the students and employees in the school. Everyone gets connected with this school and sooner or later they never want to leave this place ever.

Each story is a virtual tour to the history. They deal with racism, segregation, bullying etc. Many of them are not just a simple story to read but has a powerful message to convey. The stories glide through recklessness of the middle-graders but they also highlight the sincerety and purity of their mind as well.

Overall this is a great read for every child, easily impacting their imagination and creativity.

My review

Magic in Mauve is a heartwarming story of three women whose life has been unexpectedly blossomed into happiness. Monique is a fashion reporter who designed and stitched a mauve skirt for her wedding. When her wedding was unexpectedly called off, she donated it. This skirt changed hands and bought fortune to whomsoever wear it. She follows the trail in an attempt to retrieve it unraveling the magical stories of women who are touched by the magic of mauve.

The story begins by narrating three different parallel plots centering around three women in entirely different circumstances. I was ardently following the story to know how their lives will get intervenes and when. But this turn was very surprising for me. They all are connected by Paris, the holy city of fashion, ironically.

The skirt may or may not possess magic. But it will certainly give confidence to whoever wears it. This confidence is the root cause for change their lives. They finally face their fears and all other things fall into place. This is such a beautiful story about women who are finding happiness in their lives by their own will.

I liked the concept of this story. The author has beautifully blended empowering ideas and penned down a magical story around it. The story is fast-paced and has elements of a thriller, always keeping me at the edge of the seat to know what happens next. Really loved the narration.

Primarily a collection of selected travel blogs taking you places through true stories of various travels and journeys.

Title: Let’s take you places

Author: Hooma Roy Choudhury

My review

Let’s take you places is a small bitter-sweet slice of years of traveling experience of the author, Hooma Roy Choudhury. Through ten chapters, the author gives the readers a glimpse of her 15+ years of travel experience ranging from all the states in India to several international travels. The tales are written in a unique style that captures a realistic experience. I felt that I’m traveling with the author through all these terrains. This makes the travelogue an unforgettable experience.

My favorite tale from the book is about Spiti Valley. The hair-raising adventure combined with unexpected situations was not short than a thriller story. Along with the exceptional pictures that capture the pristine beauty of Spiti, this was an unforgettable tale for me.

What makes this book a standalone in the sea of travelogues is the honesty of the author about her experiences. She talks about all the difficulties of traveling alone and with family. Although she faced many struggles in life, travel was her escape from all of them. Her views on spirituality which is enriched by continuous travel was an eye-opener for me.

This is not a simple collection of travel tales. This is a beautiful essay on the experience that only traveling can buy.

Life2 by Aisha Tritle | Book review

Astrid was brought back to restore balance in the city. Cursed with a past she can barely remember, she fills her role as an assassin with ease. Astrid realizes she knows dangerously little about the place she lives and the people she kills for. As her trigger finger begins to fail her, she fears she might be labeled as Unworthy next. When an enigmatic doctor draws her into a rebellion, she won’t just have to save the city – she will also have to decide what it truly means to be human.

Title: Life2

Author: Aisha Tritle

Pages: 243

My review

Life2 by Aisha Tritle is a dystopian science-fiction novel revolving around the life and memories of Astrid Rayner, an assassin. Astrid is bought back into life to maintain balance in the city. She lost almost all the memories of her past life when she is renewed. She works for a mysterious organization known as the Office of Regulations (OR) headed by Mr. Winters. She has purpose in this renewed life, to assassinate “unworthy” persons who broke the rules. Although she is confused with haunting rudimentary memories from her past-life now and then, she eases into her role as a perfect and merciless assassin to fill the hole. She has been bought back into this new life for almost a year and the one thing that scares her most is whether she will be marked as unworthy and eliminated or not. Michael, an enigmatic doctor who seems to be particularly interested in Astrid quickly draws her attention. With this newfound company, she slowly realizes the truth about herself and the world she lives in.

Life2 is a reminder to the world that how quickly injustice can take over humanity. At the time of adversity, humans will eventually let go of their morality to survive. A world without vision will be ruled by injustice. But we will choose to accept this future-less matrix rather than thrive for a better tomorrow. This invaluable message is beautifully conveyed through this story.

The author has developed every character with care and passion, especially Astrid. The story is told through her point of view. So it is essential to build a character with an equal amount of vulnerability and courage. She is somewhat scared and confused at the beginning of the story. But she is gradually transformed into a strong personality as the story progresses. She is trying to conquer her fears by eliminating ignorance.

The whole story is structured just like a rabbit-hole. We could not know what will happen next. It is a perfect thriller this way. Altogether, this is a very enthralling plot that everyone should read once in their life.

Become Your Best Version: A workbook to explore your conditioning and visualize a magical life by Jf Brou|Book review

Become your best version is a complete workbook to transform one’s life. We all have the potential for greatness. But often we couldn’t reach that potential because we are unable to overcome the barriers in our way. The true mastery lies in overcoming these struggles. These obstacles are so complex that we lose the willpower to fight on the way. But everything could be changed if we have the right strategy. This book provides us that strategy for transformation.

The author treats the path to self-mastery as a game in this workbook. Instead of chapters this book has 11 levels. You have to reach each level by performing certain tasks. You have to fulfill the requirements of each level to advance further. This is the unique feature of this workbook and certainly the single most feature that differentiate other self-help books from this one.
I found this very helpful because treating self-mastery as a game is defining the end goal. We often couldn’t attain our full potential because we don’t have any clarity on the end goal. This workbook defines that end goal. So we can fulfill the requirements and advance to next level very easily.

Another feature of this book is, it has everything. It does not focus on a single habit building or to bring a single change in our life. It focuses a person as a whole. It focuses to transform our current self as whole to an advanced better version of ourselves. It has A-Z details to transform our life. The content in this book ranges from morning routine to night routine and from goal setting to affirmation statements. The author also includes a list of 100 productivity tricks at the end, which itself concludes everything we need in life along with a list of books, apps and business tools for reference.

This is a master guide that everyone should read once in their life to bring an actual change in life.

Title: Secret Confessions of Naughty Housewives

Author: Misty Musette

Pages: 69

My review

Secret Confessions of Naughty Housewives offers everything you can imagine in your sex life. All the rarest sexual fantasies and obsessions are bundled together with the edge of reality in this collection. As I turn the pages more and more, the tales become more interesting and diverse one after another. Every tale is fresh and adds wilder thoughts to my imaginations.

The author spares anything at all. From a salesman at a grocery store to stripper at a bachelorette party, every story fulfills extreme fantasies. This dripping hot erotic confessions will never disappoint you because the background and how the stories framed are unique to one another. The erotic content is a little too extreme in some stories as the author introduces taboos like polygamous relationships. But there is no limit to imaginations.

Although the author gives a special note at the end that this is a work of fiction, I often get into the confusion that some of them felt too real than fiction. Overall this is a very interesting, not to miss adult romance collection.

The Seven Epaulettes of Leadership by Shawn Abrams|Book review

41g51mK8R+LTitle: The Seven Epaulettes of Leadership

Author: Shawn Abrams

Pages: 154

Blurb

Shawn Abrams is a sitting member of the Pace University – Lubin School of Business Executive Education Advisory Board.
His book, The Seven Epaulettes of Leadership is a first of its kind, as. It effectively addresses and shines a light on the two areas of your life that can cost you the most. They are Leadership and Relationships. If you are leading people without the benefit of relationship, you could be bullying them, and if you are loving people without the benefit of relationship, you could be lonely.
Most people will tell you they are a leader, but few people can define leadership. How can we maintain the integrity of it or even recognize it without being able to define it? More importantly, how can we teach it if we cannot define it? Your organization has multiple levels of people and there must be Continuity of Leadership through them. This represents an intangible ‘through line’ that your profits and productivity will follow because the people that work for you are affected by it.
I do not lead with words. I coach my team with words, I mentor them with Statement challenges, and lead with compassion. In this book, you will learn how to employ Applied Leadership to coach and mentor people to reach their next level. In turn, they will help you to reach your next level. Establishing relationships with those we lead will keep them engaged with our vision long after the meeting has ended. Your vision of tomorrow is bigger than today, and the potential of you people is greater than their problems. You must believe this because aside from an extreme shortage of resources, the only reason teams fail is because of their leader. Know this, before you get people to change the way they think you must change the way you think. I will share that in detail with you.
Finally, I cover Emotional Intelligence. Leadership skills and emotional intelligence parallel each other, but they are not the same. People are more inclined to follow relationships than a leader! If you can occupy both these spaces in someone’s life at the same time, you possess The Seven Epaulettes of Leadership.

My review

The Seven Epaulettes of Leadership covers A-Z details on the practical and moral side of leadership. Considering the structure and the range of information included in the book, I can easily call it “The Bible” on leadership. The striking feature for me while reading this book was its elaborate introduction. The well-scripted introduction itself gives a holistic view on the upcoming contents in the book. The interactive and lucid way of narration used in the book is evident from the introduction itself.

Although the book is titled “The Seven Epaulettes of Leadership”, the author does not try to explain this in the beginning. The book has 11 chapters overall. In the initial seven chapters, he tries to build a strong foundation on the topic by conveying the true purpose and moral side of leadership. Only in the eighth chapter, he introduces the seven epaulettes. The rest of the chapters is used to explain the practical side of the leadership incorporating all the ideas which were previously discussed.

I really liked the style of narration used in the book. The personal, contemporary, and historical references and stories with a pinch of humor helps the reader to easily glide through the pages. This helps to absorb the core qualities explained in the book as it is.

I must say that the ideas and wisdom poured through the pages of this book is truly unmatchable. This is surely a time worthy, must-read for personal and professional development.
