My review

Blooms of Nooky by Amercia Morris is a perfect slice of creativity that invites you to experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Meet Ebony, an ambitious girl who aspires to be a top fashion designer. She moves to New York to pursue her dream. But certainly, life has some other plans for her. She has to overcome many hurdles on the way to make her dreams a reality.

I was quite familiar with the style of writing of the author through her previous work ‘Planet Nooky’. Although both stories are entirely different from one another, they possess one single most common feature- a strong female lead which drives the story. Ebony undergoes a full transformation in this book. Her naive and innocent nature transforms into a more polished, intelligent and strong charismatic personality. The author never fails to surprise her readers with an original plot. Blooms of Nooky is the best testimony to this fact.

If you are too innocent in the world of greed, you will certainly become a puppet in unknown hands. But once you realised your true power, it will only a matter of time, you can turn the tables. Ebony realised this by experiencing the hardest struggles and unknown emotions. But the path to self-discovery is essentially liberating. Since the climax offers the scope for a sequel, I hope we can visit a new set of adventures sometime soon.

One of the strongest features of this book is its storyline. The author added an element of mystery and suspense to it. This creates different shades in the main characters. We don’t know who is right or wrong. We can only see things from the viewpoint of Ebony. So the layers of this story yet to be unveiled. Looking forward to reading more books from the author.

An Interview with Ronald S. Barak| Author of JK’s Code

Today I’ll be hosting  author Ronald S. Barak on my blog. His book “JK’s Code” is available on Amazon.com

Ronald S. Barak

Ronald S. Barak, bestselling author, Olympic athlete, law school honors graduate, and experienced courtroom lawyer, is uniquely qualified to write his novels that appeal to all political and legal thriller fans.

Described by his readers as a cross between Agatha Christie, Lee Child, and John Lescroart, bestselling author Barak keeps his readers flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. While he mostly lets his characters tell his stories, he manages to get his licks in too.

Barak derives great satisfaction from knowing that his books not only entertain but also stimulate others to think about how things might be, how people can actually resolve real-world problems. In particular, Barak tackles the country’s dysfunctional government representatives–not just back-seat driving criticism for the sake of being a back-seat driver, but truly framing practical remedies to the political abuse and corruption adversely affecting too many people’s lives today. Barak’s extensive legal background and insight allow him to cleverly pollinate his fiction and today’s sad state of political reality.

Barak resides in Pacific Palisades, California, where he is hard at work on his next novel, JK’s Code.

Me: What inspired you to transition from lawyer to fiction writer?

Ronald: I wrote my first novel on a dare from some friends while I was still practicing law full time. I had so much fun writing that first novel that the transition from lawyer to fiction writer became a no brainer.

Me: How did practicing law help with being a writer?

Ronald: My novels are legal and political thrillers. I was already a political junkie and knew from every day reading what was current. My legal background helped me write my novels without having to do much research. My first novel, The Amendment Killer, took me the better part of a year to write. Practice makes better if not perfect; I wrote JK’s Code in six weeks. This would not have been as easy for me or as timely if I didn’t have the law practice background that I do.

Me: How would you describe your writing process (plotter versus pantser)?

Ronald: I am definitely a pantser. I typically have only one or two thoughts in my head about the plot and the possible outcome when I begin writing. Each day, I review what I wrote the prior day (and clean it up) and then keep going from there. The story often turns out quite a bit different than I originally anticipated. In the case of JK’s Code, I originally thought I was going to write a story about crypto currency crime and, given what was going on in the world, I completely changed that to cybersecurity crime.

Me: I see in your bio that you were an Olympic athlete. How does preparing and competing compare to writing a novel?

Ronald: I was an Olympic gymnast. Writing a novel is kind of like mental gymnastics. One is physical and the other is mental, but they are remarkably similar in terms of practice and focus. The more you practice and focus, the better athlete you can become (assuming a certain amount of innate ability in your genes). The more you practice and focus, the better writer you can become. I think my earlier discipline as an athlete has definitely helped me as a writer.

Me: Tell us a little about the Brooks/Lotello series.

Ronald: When I was dared by some friends to write a novel, and dared to rise to the challenge, I figured out I should write what I liked reading, political and legal suspense and mysteries. I also figured I should write what I know. I had extensive experience as a trial lawyer and to a lesser extent as a trial judge. From there, I created my primary protagonist, Cyrus Brooks, a retired U.S. District Court judge, who kind of thinks and looks like I do, and has a personality and sense of humor similar to mine. I love Constitutional Law (it take all kinds of law and it takes all kinds of people, what can I say?). So, I dreamed up the issue of whether amending the Constitution requires Congressional participation. I needed a victim. I created a precocious 11 year old granddaughter of a Supreme Court Justice. I forced him to choose between saving the country and saving the life of his granddaughter, who was kidnapped by a psychopath wanting to control the outcome of a Supreme Court case about whether an amendment to the Constitution opposed by Congress could still be valid. Because I am diabetic and know the subject, I made the kidnapped youngster diabetic to add considerable complication and tension to the story. Because I’m a pantser, these complications arose as I wrote and not at all neatly in advance. I called that first novel The Amendment Killer because the bad guy, a government spook wanted to kill that Constitutional amendment. In my next novel, The Puppet Master, Cyrus Brooks and his colleague Frank Lotello, a homicide detective, are tasked with finding a vigilante serial killer, a puppet master you might say, assassinating corrupt government officials because he feels they had stripped him of everything he had, his family, his business, his dignity and—maybe—even his sanity. The third novel in my Brooks/Lotello series, Payback, was about a psychopathic serial killer at an international writing conference killing prominent writing personalities because he believed they were not paying him the proper respect as a writer. Some think this killer reflects how I feel as a writer. (You do have to be able to laugh at yourself!) Brooks just happened to be at the conference studying to write a novel of his own. In my latest Brooks/Lotello novel, JK’s Code, a young college technology genius who happens to be the brother-in-law of Frank Lotello stumbles across the plot of a U.S. president to assure his continuing control of the country, right down to the events of January 6. However did I imagine such a story in mid-2020?

Me: JK’s Code is your 4th book in the series. What is it about?

Ronald: In my latest Brooks/Lotello novel, JK’s Code, a young college technology genius who happens to be the brother-in-law of Frank Lotello, one of the two protagonists in the Brooks/Lotello series, stumbles across the plot of a U.S. president to assure his continuing control of the country, right down to the events of January 6. However did I imagine such a story in mid-2020?

Me: What are some of the challenges when writing about real-time issues?

Ronald: Keeping them timely, often referred to as “ripped from the headlines.” In my opinion, to really be “timely,” it is necessary to do your writing before the headlines happen. In The Puppet Master, the second in my Brooks/Lotello series, the killer asserts a legal defense to murder that had never been tried in the real-world courts. Two years later, a real-world serial killer asserted that very defense, which went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. In my latest in the series, JK’s Code, the fictional U.S. president attempted a coup to take over the government. I wrote that seven months before it happened on January 6. I refer to the challenge of writing about real-time issues as having to be creative, to have an imagination on steroids one might say, and to dream up things that might happen before they do in the real world. I might have liked JK’s Code to be traditionally published, but that would have taken another year to come to market and by then it would not have been as timely as when it was released, before many of the events I imagined came to pass.

Me: Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

Ronald: The short answer is “I don’t know.” Sometimes they come to me in my sleep. I just wake up with a thought, jot it down on a post-it note and go back to sleep. Sometimes it comes to me when I’m playing golf or exercising. Sometimes it comes to me when I’m watching or reading the news or a movie and I say “What if . . . ?” The key is to jot down a few words before you forget the idea.

Me: Are your characters created from scratch or are they based on people from your life?

Ronald: Most of the time, they are based on people that I observe in real life. Brooks is very similar to . . . me. Lotello is quite similar to our son. The president in JK’s Code bears a remarkable similarity in personality to Donald Trump. In fact, I’m quite apolitical. I picked on Trump because he was there and people would see who I was mimicking. My next novel might very well pick on Biden. The 11 year old kidnapped granddaughter of a U.S. Supreme Court justice in The Amendment Killer has diabetes. So do I. I used that trait because I know the subject well and could write about it without having to do much research. I also think it’s a subject that can benefit from more attention. Payback involves a novelist who is a psychopathic serial killer and thought he deserves more recognition. Was I thinking of me? Hardly, but it always helps to be able to laugh at yourself.

Me: What is the most challenging part of the writing process for you?

Ronald: If by “process,” you mean the art of writing, I don’t have an answer. If you enjoy writing as much as I do and you are patient, the process will come to you. If you include in process everything that goes with a writing career, then the most challenging part of the writing business is, hands down, building a market and a brand. If you’re an athlete, as I have been, then all you have to do is be talented and work hard. If you’re a lawyer, as I am, then all you have to do is be talented and work hard. If you’re a writer, as I strive to be, it is not enough to be talented and work hard. There are many talented novelists who have worked very hard who you’ve never heard of. You need a little bit of luck to go with the talent and effort.

Me: What is the best piece of advice you received about writing?

Ronald: Write what you know and what you love.

Me: What is the worst piece of advice you received about writing?

Ronald: Write a good story and the readers will come.

Synopsis

Genre(s): Political Thriller; Contemporary Fiction

“Twenty year old computer genius Jake Klein, known to his friends as JK, drops out of college to pursue fortune and fame in the field of cybersecurity. Discovering and upending a conspiracy between the presidents of Russia and America to manipulate the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, JK finds himself in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the heads of state of two of the world’s most powerful countries—with the emphasis on deadly. Revealing the truth to the world definitely comes with a price. The fourth in the bestselling Brooks/Lotello novels, JK’s Code, is a political thriller teeming with real-time events, satire, suspense, and just a hint of romance that couldn’t come any closer to the realities of 2020 if JK were covertly dividing his time between the White House and the Kremlin—which he may just be.”

My review

Dessa: Silence in Bloodlust by Andreya Lombardi is the second instalment of the Shadowland saga. Through the first book of this series, Andreya has created an enchanted world of magic and dark fantasy. We were introduced to Syreene and Cabil and their adventures and existence struggles.
The first book ended in a perfect cliffhanger and I was eagerly waiting to read the next one. This one picks up the story from exactly where it was ended, without any glitch.

Although the main theme of the first book was vengeance for the murder of Syreene’s parents, this part is more focused on the evolution of Syreene’s character. Her family history is under close examination and unexpected revelations is derailing her old motives. The main theme for part 2 is the survival of protagonists. They are trapped in the web of conspiracy and power struggle. But all this is linked to a larger than life prophecy too. The mystery of Syreene’s existence is vastly explored in this one.

Her powers and skills are unexplored. This is controlling her. The more she understands her true self, the less it controls her. Her multilayered character is portrayed very beautifully by the author. Empathy and emotional connections are the two recurring themes in this story. Through them, the author is trying to create depth for the characters. They are essential especially if you are presenting a fantasy series to the readers.

I felt that all main characters are multilayered and the author only scratched its surface. This alone adds some unpredictability to the story. I have absolutely no idea where she is heading with this story. Andreya is mounting suspense through her flawless narration. I’m hopelessly thinking that she may reveal something. But again she draws the curtain at the cliffhanger. Many questions left unanswered!

My review

An extraordinary story!

Planet Nooky invites us to a realm of secrets that no one ever explored. They are the ones most sought by human but to no avail. It reveals the secret of pure ecstasy behind the greatest pleasure ever known to humans. But we’re not blessed with that ecstasy forever. Why? This story offers a satisfying yet humorous explanation of this mystery. Planet Nooky is ruled by Gamba and Oni. Their strength and happiness depends on each other. Also, the existence of the people live on their planet. But what happens if Oni put forward an impossible demand that Gamba is not willing to fulfil? Will, it became the reason for their destruction?

First of all, I acknowledge the creativity of the author to come up with a story like this. This concept is fresh and unexplored. But the true talent is to present that unique story without losing its charm and excitement and she has succeeded in it. Planet Nooky answers all our questions. We can find the pieces of human nature in the character of all divine deities. They are considered as the epitome of success. But they also are in the search of novelty and happiness in their life. Without finding and experiencing something new, every life will get deteriorated eventually. This also can be the reason for their destruction. Because greed has no end. We are willing to go to any extreme for the fulfilment of our desires. This theme is beautifully illustrated in this story.

In short, this is truly an amazing work indeed. A full story is narrated through 50 pages with unmatchable freshness!

Dessa-Spirit of Vengeance: A Dark Fantasy Thriller Series (Book One) (Shadowland Saga 1) by Andreya Lombardi | Review

Fight for the militia? Or for a hidden agenda? Cabil knows Syreene all to well—her motives marked with the stain of vengeance of her murdered parents. But Syreene is bent on learning the craft of elemental-wielding for better or for worse, even though her pyro-dancing human foster brother keeps her under lock and key. How embarrassing, for an elf like herself to bare no earthly arms. It’s bad enough her kind is ridiculed already.

The life of a schoolgirl carries little excitement to spark her itch of finding the demon who slayed her biological parents. Cabil insists on letting go of the past, but the fire under the redhead’s furnace burns hot. Even hotter when her older brother comes home one night, unconscious, past town curfew, slung over a mysterious man’s shoulder and plastered with blood. It’s a lot to take in—having to see her high-ranked, on guard brother wounded for the first time, possibly hanging on the brink of death, and the sight of a man that left her stomach sashaying with fluttering butterflies. Déjà vu—the complexity of the moment follows the adolescent to a reckless encounter where she later finds herself kidnapped—a terrible consequence for trying to seek out her brother’s assassin, someone working from the King’s High Council. Her high-end impulsive trait falling in the hands of Cabil’s sworn enemy—smells like a perfect formula for chaos.

Not to worry, as long as she doesn’t tell anyone what happened in the dungeon that night, all will be well. Wishful thinking!

The story unravels, following the trio through battle, sorcery, adventure, and discovering of family secrets. How will Syreene handle her new persona, and face the man who haunts her dreams?

My review

A perfect piece of art!

Dark fantasy thrillers always offers their readers freshness, excitement entangled with suspense. Dessa- Spirit of Vengeance is the epitome of this creativity. A new world with a new system is built. The fight between good and evil gets an artistic turn here. I was completely absorbed in the story and enjoyed it beyond boundaries. This fantasy thriller invites you to a rollercoaster ride of emotions, survival, magic and mystery. Syreene and Cabil are the ones who drive the whole story. Cabil is fierce and courageous while Syreene is determined and strong-willed.

One of the striking feature of this story is the evolution of Syreene. She is a delicate kind soul at the beginning of the story. But she slowly transformed into a fierce warrior due to her circumstances. She is in a process of finding her own identity and existence. But what makes this character interesting is, she is only exploring her unexposed identity. Because of that, her innate qualities stays the same. In other words, Syreene is an extremely satisfying protagonist.

The narration and world-building is the two core pillars of this story. The author has created a foolproof world where elves, humans and demons are fighting for their supreme regime. Every character and the creation story was introduced in the beginning. This provides a comprehensive understanding of all characters beforehand.

In short, this is an epic story of mystery and vengeance. You can’t put down this thriller for sure.

My review

Midnight City by J.R Manga is a perfectly crafted dark fantasy thriller. The story follows a young federal agent Charlie James who is assigned to investigate the increasing missing cases in Seattle. Soon he finds out that his first solo mission is to investigate the missing of a woman named Latoya, with whom he shares a traumatic past from childhood. As the story unfolds, we can witness how these seemingly unrelated incidents leading us to a bigger picture where they all make sense.

The plot is surprisingly fresh, especially for a fantasy genre book. This is not a usual recipe that is flooding in the book market. The author has created a stunning world with a touch of reality. This makes the story captivating and engaging.

The narration and writing style deserves all the praise to carry a good story without losing its charm till the end. We are moving with Charlie as he finds clues one after another. This creates enough suspense to stick with the story.

Undoubtedly, this is one of the best fantasy thrillers I ever read. Highly recommended.

Genre: Mythology, African history

My review

What a thriller this is!

A Hidden Message by Elijah Shaw is undoubtedly one of the best stories ever crafted in the mythological fiction genre. It is a blend of African mythology, history, culture with contemporary fiction. We can witness how the modern-day scene is quickly transcending into age-old magical African history. The story is crafted in a way to create a perfect connection between these two entirely different worlds. This magical reality is introduced through the life of Nasir Johnson, a freshman from San Diego state university.

He is a guy who survives with his unique charm and wit. At first, his story seems like anything but ordinary. But then a quick surprise hit hard Nasir’s life. He is suddenly manipulated by some strangers to take part in a quest to unravel his destiny. He realizes that he is not what he thought of. This newfound excitement and knowledge led him eventually to assume his role in the age-old war for power and supremacy.

What makes this tale apart from others is its take on African mythology. It is one of the less explored areas in fiction. But this tale proves that it is more exciting than any of its counterparts. The credit surely goes to the author. He carefully crafted a good story out of this conflict around world mythology. I admire his storytelling skills so much because the story never loses its excitement and thrill. The humorous take on every issue enabled a smooth flow of the story.

I really liked the characterization, especially of the protagonist. His quick wit and light-heartedness along with firm determination sets him apart as a character.

Honestly, I think that this story ended too quickly. Because it has much more potential and it ended in this absolute possibility. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

My review

Mother of Machines: Sanaa (Book 1) is a perfectly crafted sci-fi thriller. The story captured my attention instantly and kept me at the edge of my seat until the end. It is a wonderful mixture of technology, science fiction, and thriller. But I must say this is not a typical sci-fi story. Because I thought that this story will be a predictable one with the usual pattern in the beginning. But it completely blew away my preconception at the end.

One of the unique features of this thriller is its strong female protagonist. She transforms throughout the story. Her weak points gradually fade away and she rises to become the “mother of machines” at the end. She finds her courage and voice. That heroism deserves huge praise.

Another strong point of this book is its narration. The author doesn’t reveal too much background details on any of the characters. Thus creates lots of room for imagination. This also invites sudden twists and turns which lands us in a whole new another level of story. Also, the fast-paced narration was quite satisfying for me because it helped me to explore the story much faster.

Book 1 of the Mother of Machines series ends in a cliffhanger. I loved the climax and looking forward to reading the next one.

The Quest for Asian Sin by Monty Lemley | Review

In life, even daily decisions can result in unintended consequences. Sara Jones, a single mother of two and owner of a luxurious estate, left for a routine run along her beachfront property. When she didn’t return, her daughter contacted the Wayfarer Police. A mysterious phone call to the police during the course of their investigation stated that Sara had decided to join a friend on his yacht. Case closed.

When Jack Conner, retired sheriff’s lieutenant from Colorado vacationing in San Diego, picks up a week-old newspaper, he reads a simple two-paragraph story about a retired porn star named Asian Sin who disappeared. With time on his hands and a secret in his past, Jack decides to start his own investigation into the case of the missing Asian Sin. Thus begins the quest for a woman who is more than what she appears by a man who is haunted by an event that occurred more than thirty years earlier.

Title: The Quest for Asian Sin

Author: Monty Lemley

My review

The Quest for Asian Sin is a perfectly written crime thriller. Crime thrillers always attracted my gaze. They offer mysteries, action, and often larger insights. This novel falls into this category. Not a typical drama but more like a spiritual life insight journey. I really liked this twist which makes this thriller stand out.

The story follows Jack Conner, a retired Sheriff and now a private investigator. A local news about a missing porn star, named Asian Sin caught his attention while he was on a vacation in San Diego. With no apparent reason for taking this investigation, Jack was rather driven into this because of his strange past. But when he dives deep into this crime, it unfolded beyond his expectations. The missing incident has appeared to us a small cover-up story in the beginning but it has more layers than it seems to be. This long journey with many unbelievable twists ultimately bought him a new life. Thus closing a circle.

This is a very well written and structured investigation drama. The author often dragged us to deadends which frequently arise one question-what’s next? Then a new dimension of the story is introduced which directed us to a new set of characters and behaviours. From the beginning of the investigation, suspicion is looming over every character Jack meets. They all have an arc of deception and mystery. This makes the story even more interesting. I was on the edge of my seat while reading. The story was very captivating and engaging. It easily grabbed my attention and never let it go.

The smooth flowing narration is a plus point. The protagonist is introduced with a good background. The author stays with him until his life changed for good. It turns to be a feel-good story at the end. I really liked this change and climax.

In a nutshell this is undoubtedly a must-read for all crime thriller fans.

Oath: A Black Diamond Novel by Poppy Kuroki | Review

“Only through death may I leave the Black Diamond’s side…”

Tired of scraping for food in her war-torn homeland, Colette sneaks aboard a ship to Ranigh, the prosperous Empire capital, to seek her fortune. When she’s caught stealing, she is forced to pledge an Oath to a life of assassinhood.

Obedience or love?

Title: Oath: A Black Diamond Novel

My review

Oath: A Black diamond novel by Poppy Kuroki is a dark fantasy-themed story. The plot is revolving around the strong female protagonist, Colette. This is her journey for survival and a better life. The whole story is narrated in a very unique manner. Whenever Colette’s journey hit a dead end, the plot is twisted and she unwillingly lands on entirely different circumstances. Her helplessness in these situations was heartbreaking. Hope is the only thing that gives her the strength to overcome these situations. She undergoes many transformations throughout the story. They all are for survival. But she remains true to her character. The climax underlines her character and it was satisfying from a reader’s point of view.

Strong female characters are one of the unique features of Ms Kuroki’s book. Another recurring theme I found was the sisterhood. The depth of human relationships is tested in her novels. She delves into the deepest human emotions and mold her characters with a touch of charisma. These characters are relatable and realistic. The portrayal of hunger was raw and convincing. No matter how the world progress, greed, and war remain so is poverty.

These strong themes are projected with clarity in the story. The female protagonist in the world ruled by females is a strong perspective. People bend rules for their advantages. Surviving in this world is difficult. But one must overcome every difficulty to realize our true character and destiny.
